Canadian Visa Requirements for Australians

Citizens of many countries do not need a visa to enter Canada, provided that the visit is for tourism and the duration of the visit is 90 days or less. Australian citizens do not need to apply for a visa if they are entering Canada for these reasons. If they wish to enter Canada for a longer period of time or for purposes of work or school, they must apply for a Temporary Residency Visa (TRV).
  1. Application and Fees

    • A TRV application must be completed. It can be downloaded from the Government of Canada website as a PDF file. The two-page visa application asks for passport information, citizenship, reason for wanting to come to Canada, the applicant's itinerary, past employment and education. Visa fees vary and are listed on the Government of Canada website.

    Passport and Passport Photos

    • To qualify for the TRV visa, applicants must have a valid passport issued by the country of citizenship that has at least one blank page. The TRV visa will not be issued for longer than the validity of the passport. Two additional color passport photos must be submitted along with the application.

    Proof of Adequate Funds

    • TRV applicants must show documentation of sufficient funds to support the applicant and any dependents while they are in Canada. Acceptable documents include the previous month's bank statements or a letter from the applicant's employer verifying expenses will be covered while in Canada.

    Travel Itinerary

    • Australian citizen who wish to travel to Canada on a TRV visa must provide a travel itinerary while in Canada. The itinerary should include arrival and departure dates, travel airlines and any additional travel that the visa applicant plans on doing while in Canada.

    Additional Documentation

    • For those Australians who would like a TRV visa to temporarily work or go to school in Canada, documentation verifying temporary employment in Canada or a Canadian school acceptance letter must be submitted.

    Travelling with Dependents or Family

    • Applicants traveling with dependents or other family member must provide a passport for each person. A Supplementary Family Information Sheet also must be submitted. This form can be downloaded from the Government of Canada website as a PDF file.
