The Best Tent Sites at Fort Stevens

Fort Stevens is a decommissioned Civil War fort on the northwestern coast of Oregon with aging battlements that have been turned into a state park. There is a large campground in the park with sites capable of accommodating either tents or RVs. The park is open year round and reservations should be made well in advance; however, during the winter most campsites are on a first come, first serve basis.
  1. North Loop

    • The North Loop includes A, L, M, N and O. The A loop is comprised of primitive tent sites. These sites lack any amenities, short of a fire ring and a picnic table. They offer a little less privacy, and you must walk to the adjacent loop for showers and restrooms. However, they are adjacent to Peter Iredale Road, the main road through the park. The other North Loops sites have electricity availability. Water hookups are not available in the North Loops. In addition, showers and restrooms are centrally located in these loops.

    South Loop

    • The South Loop includes C, D, E, F, G, H, I and J. These sites are adjacent to Coffenbury Lake, so the location is ideal for those interested in water activities. These loops contain full hookups. Tent camping at these sites would allow immediate access to both electricity and water. These are also the sites desired by RV owners, but the high density of trees in the campgrounds should provide some privacy if you are looking for a quieter campsite.

    Yurt Village

    • You can forget your own tent and reserve a yurt. Located adjacent to the North Loop is the park's yurt village. Yurts are circular, semi-permanent tents based on the design of the tents of nomadic East Asia tribes, which are easily assembled and disassembled. The park's yurts sleep five people comfortably between the bunk bed that is a single on top and a double on bottom and the futon sofa, which becomes a double bed when pulled out. They also contain heat, lights, electricity and a table and chairs. All you need to bring is bedding, food and dishes, as well as any other camping gear you would normally want. You just don't need to bring a tent.
