How to Camp at Jawbone Canyon

Jawbone Canyon is situated near the town of Mojave in the Californian desert. It is a popular destination for all terrain vehicle (ATV) and bike enthusiasts. The off highway vehicle (OHV) open area covers more than 7,000 acres and you can ride anywhere your experience level allows. Within Jawbone Canyon there are many primitive camping sites to explore and there is no entrance fee. Most of the sites are accessible by regular two-wheel drive vehicles as well as trailers.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a map of the trails at the Ranger station which is off of Hwy 14. These include trails for bikes as well as vehicles. Rent an ATV or a bike from the Ranger Station.

    • 2

Take one of the trails indicated on the map to any of the many remote spots in the canyon to find a camp site. Camping is unrestricted within the OHV and Jawbone Canyon area. If possible, as per the Bureau Of Land Management's request, park your vehicle in an area that has previously been used or disturbed, so as to protect the fragile eco-system.

    • 3

Pitch a tent or set up your camper and build a fire. Campfires are unrestricted in the area, however, burn season laws are enforced so check with the ranger station. Take care not to build the fire too big or to leave it burning. Check that your tent and equipment is securely tied down as strong winds can kick up during the night.

    • 4

Clean your campsite when you leave as the canyon is a protected eco-system. Take any left over nails from the burnt wood with you as these could easily puncture tires.
