How to Camp at Lake Powell

Lake Powell is the outdoor enthusiast's playground. It is located at Glen Canyon in parts of Utah and Arizona. While most activities at Lake Powell center around the water, there are also great camping spots around the lake and in the Glen Canyon area.

Instructions

    • 1

Camp close to Lake Powell. There are three campgrounds within five miles of the lake. They are the Painted Hills RV Park (435) 684-2233, Bullfrog RV Park (800) 528-6154 and Halls Crossing RV park (435) 684-2261. Contact the campgrounds directly for information about amenities and reservations.

    • 2

Camp at Canyonlands National Park-Squaw Flat Campground. The park is about 15 miles from Lake Powell. There are limited amenities at this campground, and it is open year-round.

    • 3

Stay at Hot Spring Campground in Hanskville, Utah. This campground is about 20 miles away from Lake Powell, but still in within easy reach.

    • 4

Try primitive camping at Wahweap, Bullfrog, Hite or close to the shore of the lake, if you're in the mood for an adventure with no amenities available. Campers must bring self-contained portable toilets with them. Everything packed into camp must be taken out of camp.

    • 5

Stay in a National Park Service Campground. There is a small fee for camping at these campgrounds, but running water and a toilet are well worth the small fee if you are not feeling up for a primitive camping experience.

    • 6

Use designated campsites when available. It is prohibited to alter your camping area in any way. There is no digging, cutting branches or any other action that would disturb the natural surroundings. Campgrounds must be on slick rock or bare sand, at least 100 feet from water sources.
