How to Houseboat on Lake Cumberland

Houseboating on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky is a wonderful way to spend vacation time. With temperatures in the 80s, water-skiing, swimming and sliding into the lake from a built-in water slide are just a few of the fun activities you can indulge in. Watch scenic foliage and beautiful waterfalls glide by as you sit on the top deck. Or slip into a secret cove and fish for bluegill or large-mouth bass.

      Reserve a houseboat. Houseboats on Lake Cumberland range in length from about sixty to eighty feet. Whether you want to go for 3 days and nights or 7, there is a great houseboat to fit most budgets. Prices range from approximately $800 to 8000, depending on the boat and the time of the year. While August and September is the height of Cumberland's season, you can get a better price at the beginning of the season in April and May.

      Drive the houseboat. The houseboating staff will teach you how to drive the boat before you leave the marina. While it handles a bit differently than a car, it is very simple to master in a short time.

      Enjoy the houseboat's amenities. Vacationing on a houseboat isn't exactly roughing it. The houseboats on Lake Cumberland boast sleeping suites, full bathrooms, air conditioning, TVs, VCRs and luxury floating on the lake.

      Sight-see close to the lake. While you're there, visit Wolf Creek Dam, 76 Falls and Cumberland Falls. Even go out to eat, or rather in...tie your houseboat off at State Dock and walk up the gangplank to The Rosie Tomato or the Lakeside Grill restaurant.

      Turn in the houseboat. Make sure to turn the houseboat in on time so you do not incur a late fee. Find out ahead of time if you are required to empty the dump tanks. Most of the rental companies will do this for you.
