Often, the biggest expense of a trip is the amount you'll pay at the motel. Reducing your nightly rate can free up your travel money so you can get more enjoyment out of your trip. Often, getting a better rate at a motel is as easy as asking for one. There are some other approaches you can use as well, techniques that every savvy traveler should have in his bag of tricks.
Ask for a better rate. Often, obtaining a better price is this simple. Motels are one place where bargaining is still alive and well. If the motel is not full, they will want to have as many rooms occupied as possible. You may need to speak to a manager, as the front desk employee may not be authorized to provide a better rate.
If you don't get a break on the price of the room, ask if you can have an upgrade. This costs the hotel nothing, and is frequently done.
Become a member of a travel organization, such as AAA. Many motels provide discounts to members of these organizations. Other organizations unrelated to travel may help you obtain a discount as well. If you are a member of a retirement organization, alumni organization or a teacher organization, ask if a discount is provided. Government employees are also frequently provided with discounts, as are seniors.
Shop around. Go to the motel's Iinternet site and check the prices there. Check prices from online travel clearinghouses, such as Expedia or Travelocity. Call the hotel's front desk and see what price you are quoted. Use the information you have obtained to negotiate a better price.
Ask if there are discounts for staying over a weekend or for a period of three days. Motels make money when they can keep the same guest in the same room. Even if there is no formal discount, the front desk manager may give you one anyway. You can also find these discounts on the internet, where they are more likely to be advertised.
Time your trip. If you can travel off season, you'll find that motel prices are much cheaper than during the busiest time of year. Often, they are half the price. An added bonus is that you get to avoid the crowds.
If you are going to be staying in a motel in a city, realize that prices are most likely going to be the highest during the week, due to business travelers. If you are going to the beach, the prices will be the highest on the weekend. Try to plan your trip accordingly.
