Wappapello is a small unincorporated area in southeast Missouri, 15 miles north of Poplar Bluff. It is a gateway to Lake Wappapello and the Lake Wappapello State Park. It is also at the edge of the Missouri University Forest Conservation Area, a vast area of protected wilderness. Outdoors enthusiasts flock to this area for hunting, fishing, boating and many other outdoor type activities. There are hotels or businesses in Wappapello, but there are accommodations in the general area for those wanting to stay while exploring.
The only motel inside Wappapello is Miller's Motor Lodge, which offers a variety of accommodations. There are 15 standard rooms in the main motel area. Two mini suites are also available, with beds and a sofa sleeper, and there are three larger rooms with king-size beds. Three suites have kitchenettes, which have a full-size range and refrigerator, along with two beds and a sofa sleeper. Also on the grounds are four log cabins, which are for two to six guests. These cabins have a fireplace, and the owner supplies the wood for your fire. Millers has an outdoor pool, shuffleboard, volleyball and horseshoes. While you are there, visit the ladies boutique and souvenir shop. Meeting and banquet facilities are available. The lake is within walking distance. Jeff's Barbeque is next door, and there are other restaurants in walking distance.
Bullwinkle's Rustic Lodge is between Wappapello and Poplar Bluff. This lodge has 16 rooms, which include whirlpool rooms, Elite rooms and standard rooms. The Elite rooms have vaulted ceilings and are larger than the standard rooms. There is also a RV Park on the grounds. The Bullwinkle Pub offers food as well as your favorite drink. The pub is filled with antiques, a stuffed moose head and other curiosities.
The Drury Inn of Poplar Bluff is on the north side of town, and a short drive from Lake Wappapello and other outdoor attractions. The hotel has 78 rooms and small pets are allowed with no extra fee. The hotel serves a free hot breakfast. There is free soda and popcorn in the lobby from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. Free food is served in the evenings on certain days; the food includes items such as hot dogs and chicken strips. Free long distance calls are available, with a time limit. There is an outdoor pool. Free Wi-Fi is available in all areas.
The Super 8 Hotel is on U.S. Highway 67 near the Mingo Wildlife Area and Wappapello. This hotel has two floors with an elevator or stairs. A hot breakfast, which includes omelettes, is served in the morning. Free popcorn is served in the afternoon in the lobby. Pets are allowed but there is a one-time fee. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the building, and there is a computer available for guest use in the lobby. Several restaurants are within easy walking distance.
