Kennewick, the largest of Washington State's Tri-Cities, is located on the Columbia River in the southeast region of the state. Native Americans were the first known residents of the area, and the city's name is derived from an American Indian word meaning "grassy place." Lewis and Clark came through in the early 19th century, but Kennewick was not incorporated until 1904. In the 1970s, the three nuclear plants built at Hanford provided job security for area residents. Kennewick Man, the oldest (9,200 years old) nearly complete skeleton ever found in North America, was discovered on the banks of the river in 1996. Over 160 wineries lie within 50 miles of the city, which sits in the heart of Washington wine country. Visitors are attracted to the boating, fishing and swimming opportunities afforded by the Columbia River.
