Rocky Point, Mexico (also known as Puerto Penasco) is a traditional fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Cortez. Situated just 60 miles south of the Arizona border, this once quiet hamlet by the sea has seen dramatic growth as a resort and vacation destination. The town is readying an international airport to service an influx of travelers. As of early 2010; however, direct airline service was not available. Most travelers to Rocky Point opt to fly into nearby airports in Arizona and drive the remainder of the way to the Mexican coast.

    • The most popular airport access to Rocky Point is via Phoenix. This is Arizona's largest airport and usually provides the most economical fares from numerous major carriers. Many rental car companies will provide you with a vehicle and the required Mexican insurance policy as well. A handful of private shuttle companies will also provide transportation. Phoenix is approximately 215 miles from Rocky Point. Follow Interstate 10 West from Phoenix to State Highway 85 South. The border crossing is in Lukeville, Arizona. Check current customs regulations for entry requirements before your trip. Once across the border, Mexico Route 8 from the Mexican border town of Sonoita will deliver you almost literally straight to Rocky Point.

    Tucson (TUS)

    • Tucson offers another convenient major airport option to choose en route to Rocky Point. Daily non-stop service is offered via major carriers from across the United States. Once securing your rental vehicle in Tucson, follow Interstate 10 West to Interstate 19 South. Turn West on State Highway 86 (also known as the Ajo Highway) until you reach the town of Why, Arizona. Follow State Highway 85 South from Why to Lukeville, Arizona, where you'll encounter the Mexican border crossing. Follow Mexico Route 8 from Sonoita, Mexico on the other side into Rocky Point.

    Yuma (YUM)

    • Yuma is a smaller regional and international airport in western Arizona, serviced by United, SkyWest, Mesa, and US Airways airlines. Drive east from Yuma on Interstate 8 from the airport until you reach Gila Bend, Arizona. From Gila Bend, turn south on State Highway 85 where you will travel through the towns of Ajo, Why, and Lukeville. Once across the border, Mexico Route 8 from Sonoita will guide you directly to Rocky Point.
