Fort Smith Regional Airport lies only 3 miles to the southeast of Fort Smith's city center. The U.S. military is the primary user of the airport, but two commercial airlines operate daily flights out of it: American Airlines and Delta Airlines. As of 2010, American operates ten daily flights in and out of Fort Smith from its hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Delta offers six daily flights in and out of the airport from its Memphis International Airport Hub. The airport, opened in 1936, features an 8,000-foot east-west runway and a 5,000-foot north-south runway. It has one restaurant, Runway Cafe, and is home to four car rental providers: Avis, Budget, Hertz and National. For the military, the airport houses the Arkansas Air National Guard 188th Fighter Wing and acts as a training site for other military units. It also is home to some private aviation outfits, including the Fort Smith Flying Club and the Southern Eagle Aviation Flight School.

About an 80-mile drive to the north of Fort Smith, Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport opened in 1998 and has quickly grown into a major hub for the region, thanks largely to the nearby Walmart headquarters and its travel needs. American Airlines, which contracts for travel with Walmart, is the primary carrier for the 2,184-acre airport, but it also offers flights from Allegiant, Continental Express, Delta, United Express and US Airways Express. From the airport, travelers can fly directly to a number of major domestic destinations, including Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Minneapolis, New York and Washington, D.C. Altogether, the airport served more than 1 million passengers in 2009. All six major U.S. car rental companies also have facilities at the airport.
