Airports in Southwest Florida

Southwest Florida is not consistently defined, but it is generally considered to be the geographical area south of Tampa Bay and north of the Everglades. It hugs the peninsula's Gulf Coast and gets a lot of traffic because of its beaches, retirement appeal and fishing opportunities. If you want to fly in or out of southwest Florida, you have several airports to choose from. Depending on where you are based, you can fly to or from Fort Myers, Sarasota-Bradenton or the Keys. Tampa International Airport is 56 miles north of Sarasota and while it is not technically in the southwest part of Florida, it is a convenient option.

    • Located in Fort Myers, Southwest International Airport is served by domestic airlines that American, Delta, Southwest and US Airways, as well as international carriers such as Air Berlin and Air Canada. More than 7 million passengers come through this airport every year and according to its website, it is ranked one of the top 50 airports for passenger traffic. This airport is situated right off Interstate 75 and is convenient for travelers trying to reach Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral, Sanibel Island and the Everglades. The airport has hourly as well as short- or long-term parking, and there are shopping and dining opportunities inside the terminal.

    Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport

    • The Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is just south of Tampa and provides an easy arrival for any location in the southwest or Gulf Coast region.     Airports in the Florida Keys

    • While technically not on the mainland, Key West is as far south as you are able to go while remaining in the U.S. The island also falls toward the west of Florida, so it could qualify as an airport in southwest Florida. Key West International Airport is definitely the airport to use if you are visiting the Florida Keys. Most airlines fly into Miami, and then you take a connecting flight from Miami to Key West. There are also direct flights to and from the Bahamas. This airport, identified as EYW when you are shopping for flights, is serviced by Delta, American and US Airways, as well as smaller carriers like Cape Air.

      Charter flights and business jets also use the Marathon Airport on Marathon Key. Flights move between Marathon and southern Florida cities, such as Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Service is seasonal, so check with the airport before you plan a flight.

    Naples Municipal Airport

    • If you have a chartered flight or an executive jet, you might want to use Naples Municipal Airport in Naples. Once a military base, this airport services charter companies but no commercial airlines. A military museum is also on site.
