No matter where you stay in this part of Colorado you'll need a car to get from point A to point B. If Slick Rock is your main destination you'll find there's more to do and see within 50 miles and as travel goes in this part of the country, 50 miles is common. Just across the border in Moab, Utah are the Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park. Both have picnic areas and offer guided hikes and both are all-day visits.

If you're staying in Rico you might take in the Upper Dolores Valley but this full-day outing is best taken with a high clearance car or four-wheel drive vehicle. And if you just have a half day, a drive up to visit Telluride, where Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank, for bike riding, summer weekend festivals and great skiing if you're visiting during the ski season.
