Fort Gaines is a small community in rural southwest Georgia. Because of its natural environment from the local forest area and Lake Walter F. George, it is a destination for hunting, fishing, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities. There has also been an effort to restore historical homes and monuments and local Indian sites and state parks have made it a draw for other vacationers. There are only a few hotels directly in Fort Gaines, but there are different types of accommodations available to visitors around the town.
The Fort Gaines Inn is a basic inn located to the north of downtown Fort Gaines on Georgia State Route 39 near George T. Bagby State Park. Also close by the park is The Lodges at Georgia State Park, which is located on the shore of Lake Walter F. George, across the park from Route 39. The Lodges offers hotel rooms, restaurants and meeting facilities. It boasts being surrounded by the lake, rivers and wooded trials with hiking, biking, canoeing and fishing as local activities.
Eufaula, Alabama, just over the state border, offers many budget alternative accommodations just around 20 miles from Fort Gaines. Hotels there include Comfort Suites, Econo Lodge, Days Inn, Best Western and the Jameson Inn. There is also a Days Inn in Blakely and Cuthbert, Georgia and Americas Best Value Inn and a Best Western in Abbeville, Alabama. These budget accommodations run at rates between about $50 and $100 as of January 2011 and are generally basic hotels.
Also around Fort Gaines are mid-price hotels including the Fairfield Inn and Holiday Inn in Dothan and Jameson Inn in Eufaula. Midrange hotels in the area are around or less than $100.
Dothan, Alabama, has a number of higher-end accommodations and sits about 35 miles from Fort Gaines, giving it easy access to the area same sights and activities. The Hilton Garden Inn is located off U.S. 231 and has guest rooms with either one king bed, two double queen beds, a king suite or two double queen suites along with a complimentary coffee maker. The hotels also offers a gym, outdoor pool, jacuzzi, tennis, and high-speed Internet. Also in Dothan are a Courtyard by Marriott, Hampton Inn Suites and Residence Inn. Dothan sits about 35 miles from Fort Gaines.
