The process of booking a hotel in Cairo, Egypt, is much the same as in any other of the world's capital cities. A wide variety of accommodations are available, from fantastically expensive to cheap and charming. Depending on your needs, your budget and your sense of adventure, you might choose an American-style chain hotel, an Egyptian luxury hotel or a small independent establishment. In any case, you will want to do a bit of research and book in advance of your trip.
Decide what level of accommodations you require. You might want to be near museums or close to the Nile River or perhaps downtown. Each area has its attraction and if you have a specific agenda in mind for your visit, it is best to stay as close as possible to the places you want to visit, as travel by public transportation or taxi can be a hair-raising experience.
Check on hotel prices in dollars or whatever is your preferred currency. The Egyptian pound rate may make it seem as if the price is high, but the exchange rates fluctuate and many hotels prefer to be paid in EGP. Five-star hotels will take most credit cards but smaller ones may not.
Consider changing hotels during your Cairo visit. Many guided tours will move you around from hotel to hotel so that you can stay near the City of the Dead, the famous Khan el-Khalili marketplace or the Nile islands of Roda and Gezira.
Do not book solely from the Internet. Check guide books and reviews and then make sure to telephone, email or fax the hotel you are booking to make sure that you actually have a reservation. Unscrupulous people often try to take advantage of travelers who book on the web.
Get a confirmation number from your hotel. This way there will be no question about your reservation.
