Consider staying in Rome during July and August. These are the hot months, and Italians tend to head off for cooler climes, reducing the amount of native tourists looking for accommodations. In August, however, because of this, many shops and restaurants close. Visiting in spring and fall are recommended because the weather is mild, so if you can't handle the heat of Rome in July and August, choose a busier time.
Choose the area of Rome you wish to stay in. Having one specific area to concentrate on makes the search for a hotel less stressful. Consider staying in a slightly more expensive hotel closer to the sights than a cheaper hotel farther away. As well as wasting time getting to where you want to be, you may also have to pay for taxis or public transportation.
Log onto the official Rome tourist website at En.turismoroma.it. The website has an approved list of 928 hotels as of 2011. The hotels are listed with website addresses and price ranges for easy reference.
Use the map located on the left-hand side of the "Where to Sleep" page to find your chosen area. The street names on the map close to the sights you want to see will help you in your search for appropriate hotels.
Bookmark suitable hotels using the "Add to Bookmarks" tab next to each hotel listing. Compare the hotels for price, and choose a suitable one.
Book your chosen hotel online at the hotel reservation website listed above the Tourist Office's list of hotels. Alternatively, call the reservation number. The staff will help you choose a hotel if you can give them details such as preferred location, standard of hotel required and room rates.
