Decide where you would like to stay in New York. While Manhattan is the most popular tourist destination, choosing to stay in one of the other boroughs such as Brooklyn or the Bronx might help you find a cheaper hotel. Even if you do not stay in Manhattan, getting there is not a problem, thanks to New York's efficient public transportation system.
Avoid special events. Holiday seasons and special sporting events or conferences increase the number of tourists traveling to New York and raise the prices of hotels. Visit when hotels will have the lowest occupancy and thus the rooms will be at their lowest rates.
Begin looking for a hotel with plenty of time in advance. Booking a hotel in advance will give you the most available options. If you wait until the last minute to book a hotel, prices will increase due to increased demand, and you might not get a hotel in the area you wish for the price range you want.
Become a frequent visitor. Hotel chains often have deals with airlines, credit cards, and other institutions that offer special discounts for being a member or for frequently visiting a particular chain.
Go during the week. Many hotels tend to be at full capacity during the weekends but at lower capacity during the weekdays. Planning your trip for the middle of the week could help you save money and get a cheaper hotel room.
Stay longer. Additional discounts may be available such as discounts based on duration of stay.
Ask about discounts. When booking hotel, ask whether you qualify for student, military, or senior discounts.
Look for websites that offer last-minute hotel rates and deals. They are not always dependable, but they're worth a shot.
Book a travel package, including flight and/or car--you just might get a cheaper hotel rate.
