How to Negotiate a Motel Price

Traveling out of town can be an expensive proposition, especially when you are faced with having to spend money for a bed at a motel. Motels make up a sizable chunk of travel costs, so getting a good rate is key to staying on budget. While many people will often just pay the stated rate without question, you can employ a few effective methods to negotiate the price much lower, or at least get some extras not offered up front.

Instructions

    • 1

Check online for the most common rates for a motel in that general area. Arm yourself with this information before calling to negotiate so you will know what kind of rates are reasonable and what rates aren't.

    • 2

Call the motel directly and ask to speak with the manager. Don't deal with a toll-free line, as the people you will talk to will not have the authority to haggle a rate.

    • 3

Don't settle for the first rate they give you. Motels have many rates and they usually start at the top and work down. Ask about what kind of promotional rates the motel offers.

    • 4

Ask for extras if the motel refuses to adjust the rate. Ask for a bigger room at the same rate, for example.

    • 5

Walk away if the motel is unwilling to haggle. If a motel manager sees you're willing to walk away from the deal, he might relent and give you a better deal if the motel has a lot of vacancies.

    • 6

Negotiate a second time when you get to the check-in counter. Ask for more extras, like a better view or a full breakfast.

    • 7

Don't be shy. Ask for a price much lower than the stated rate. Motels often have many vacancies to fill, and they don't make any money turning you away, so use their need for your business as leverage by making it clear you will stay if given the right price.
