The combined hotel tax in the city of Denver has been set at 14.85 percent since January 1, 2007. This includes hotels, motor lodges, guest houses and ranches. The hotel tax is comprised of city, county and state taxes. In addition, most charges incurred during a stay will be subject to a city sales tax.
The overnight lodging tax for Denver is set at 10.75 percent as of 2010. This money is used for a number of Denver city operations, including financing the operations of the Denver Metro Convention and and Visitors Bureau.
Three more taxes are levied by the city of Denver: the Regional Transportation Tax, or RTD (1.0 percent), the Football Stadium District Tax (0.1 percent) and the Cultural Facilities District Tax (0.1 percent). The Colorado state sales tax is 2.9 percent. These four taxes, plus the Denver lodging tax, bring the total lodging tax to 14.85 percent.
Items purchased from the mini-bar are subject to a 4 percent tax. This tax is also applicable to any charges related to food and beverage, including room service. There is a 3.62 percent tax on in-room movies and most telephone charges.
