Washington, D.C. is the United States capital and is the home of the White House, the official residence and workplace of the U.S. president. Although Thomas Jefferson, the nation's third president, submitted plans for the contest to design the building architect James Hoban ultimately won. President George Washington oversaw the building's construction but never lived there. The White House is close to nearly every major attraction in the city and is surrounded by multiple luxury hotels.
