Unlike the New York City and Chicago subway systems, the Washington DC metro is an absolutely pristine form of public transportation. The Metro ensures that you don't need a car to travel around downtown Washington DC and the surrounding suburbs. Some stations even have adjacent daily parking, bike racks and lockers. Because of this extreme convenience, it's useful to book a hotel near one of the stations.

    The Phoenix Park Hotel

    • The Phoenix Park Hotel is located on North Capitol Street near the Union Station Metro. It has been serving guests since 1922, though before 1982 it was known as the Commodore. Daniel J. Coleman, Irish-American entrepreneur, bought the hotel in 1982 and gave the interior an elegant, rustic decor with accents of green. According to the official website, the guest rooms combine, "Contemporary convenience and old world luxury... . Luxurious Irish linens, fine toiletries, custom-designed carpets and chandeliers from Ireland's most noted companies are used throughout." All the rooms have flat-screen televisions, two-line phones, coffee makers and hair dryers. The hotel encompasses the famous Dubliner Restaurant and Pub, which politicians and travelers alike frequent. It even has a signature ale, the Dubliner's Amber Ale.

    The Capital Hilton

    • The Capital Hilton is located on 16th street, two blocks from the White House and within walking distance of the Washington Monument, the National Mall and the Smithsonian Museums. It is also within walking distance of the Farragut North Metro, Farragut West and the McPherson Square Metro Station. According to the official website, the rooms are meticulously decorated with "...cherry wood, Biedermeier accents, and rich emerald colors in a Neo-classical design." The hotel offers guests an ATM, a guest activity desk, a fitness center, spa, laundry service, full-service business center. The Twigs Restaurant on the lobby level, offers guests upscale American cuisine for breakfast and lunch. It offers such dishes as mushroom ravioli and crabcake sandwiches.
