The community of Butler, Alabama, has been the county seat of Choctaw County since 1847. It was named in honor of Colonel Pierce Butler, who was a captain in the U.S. Army, a lieutenant in the Seminole War and a commander of the Palmetto Regiment in the Mexican War.
