Vals is a small mountain village in Switzerland sitting at 4,100 feet above sea level, and about a three-hour train ride from Zurich Airport. It is nestled in the Vals Valley, which is a side valley of the Surselva, south of Illanz. Vals is a quiet holiday resort with plenty of opportunities for spa and wellness vacationers as well as those interested in skiing and hiking in the valley. It has several hotels and there are also a number of guest houses to choose from. The season runs from June through April, after which most hotels and resorts are closed for two months.
The Therme Vals Hotel is an award-winning piece of architecture by famous architect Peter Zumthor, as well as a popular spa resort, hotel and guesthouse. The hotel is open between June and April each year. On the weekends, there is a minimum stay of two nights if you want to stay in the costlier Peter Zumthor designed rooms. Less expensive rooms are available in several outbuildings. Hotel rooms are connected to the spa by an enclosed bridge. For those especially keen on spa time, this hotel is the best option, as hotel guests are allowed exclusive access to the busy resort in the early mornings and late evenings. There is a fine-dining restaurant on-site. Package stays are available.

The Hotel Alpina is a modern hotel and guesthouse renovated by the Bundner architect Gion Caminada. It is situated in the heart of Vals, right by the village square. The hotel has a restaurant serving wholesome, organic food. There is also a tavern. Room rates include breakfast. The hotel is open until Easter, when it closes for the season. Hotel Alpina offers packages which include Therme Spa entry and/or ski passes along with half-board accommodations. The hotel also offers special prices on mid-week stays in low season. Children are welcome.
