Saranac Lake is a village within the Adirondack Park in upstate New York. The Adirondack Mountains provide hiking, skiing and other outdoor recreational possibilities, while the area's lakes offer fishing, swimming, boating and kayaking. Saranac Lake is two and a half hours north of Albany, New York, and a similar distance from Montreal, Canada. Accommodations in the area are not overly expensive, with several discount hotels and motels available within Saranac Lake village.
The Hotel Saranac was the first fireproof hotel in the state of New York, having been built in 1927. The hotel retains many original features, with 86 guest rooms and a location right in downtown Saranac Lake. Lake Placid is nearby, with its Olympic history and training facilities. Guest rooms are available in a standard size dating from the 1920s or in a more spacious deluxe contemporary size. All guest rooms at Amanda's Village Motel are nonsmoking rooms and feature covered porches. Wireless Internet is available, and dogs are welcome to stay at the motel. Amanda's Village Motel is popular with athletes participating in the Lake Placid Ironman events. Rates change with the seasons and, as of September 2010, start at $58 per night in the spring and winter and $72 in summer and fall. Double rooms and family units have refrigerators, and guests also have use of a gas grill that is located in the motel picnic area. Massage therapy is offered with prior booking.

Open year-round, the Adirondack Motel is located close to skiing, hiking and snowmobiling trails. The motel's lakeside location allows guests to boat, swim or fish. Boat rental is available at a discount for motel guests. In addition to motel rooms, lakeside efficiencies and cottages with kitchens are available. As of September 2010, rates start at $69 per night, with an additional $10 pet charge for dogs. The motel rooms are equipped with either two double beds or one queen and one double bed. Free wireless Internet, refrigerator, cable TV and air conditioning are provided. The efficiency suites include a kitchenette with microwave and a private deck overlooking the lake. Cottages have three rooms and can accommodate up to six people.
