Tunica, Mississippi, located south of Memphis, Tennessee, was the original capital city of Tunica County, founded in 1836. Although Tunica was built as a trade center, the town slipped into poverty, and, by the 1980s, was virtually deserted. In the early 1990s, the state legalized riverboat gambling, and Tunica became one of the first towns to welcome it. Since then, Tunica has become a gambling and entertainment center similar to Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
