Located on the Gulf side of the state near Fort Meyers, Estero is home to Germain Arena, which houses the Florida Everblades ECHL franchise. A college town, Estero is adjacent to Florida Gulf Coast University. Corkscrew Road runs through Estero, past several upscale housing tracts, through farmland and next to the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, where visitors can find the rare Ghost Orchid. This plant was the basis of the popular book, The Orchard Thief, written by Susan Orlean in 1988. Local hotels offer "Ghost Orchid" specials and packages.
