Tundra is a terrestrial biome found near earth's polar regions. Tundra is characterized by low temperatures, which restrict tree and plant growth, and short growing seasons. Shrubs, grasses and mosses are typical vegetation found in the tundra. Because of the harsh climate, there are relatively few cities found within a tundra biome, but most are within the very high latitudes of the northern hemisphere in the northern areas of Canada, Alaska, Russia, Norway, Iceland and Greenland.
Canadian cities in the tundra include settlements along Canada's extreme northern frontier and along the Arctic Ocean, in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut provinces. These cities include Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, Aklavik, Fort McPherson, Old Crow, Iqaluit and Qausuittuq.
Alaskan cities in the tundra include settlements along the state's extreme west and north coasts. These cities include Nome, Unalakleet, Kotzebue, Point Hope, Wainwright, Barrow and Kaktovik.
Russian cities in the tundra include settlements along Russia's northern frontier along the Arctic Ocean. These cities include Murmansk, Polyarnyy, Matochkin Shar, Kahabarovo, Kara, Dikson, Nordvik, Ust'-Olenek, Tiksi, Kazach'ye, Allaykha, Ambarchik, and Anadyr.
Norway has a number of cities within the tundra. These settlements include Nesna, Bodo, Svolvaer, Harstad, Narvik, Tramso, Hammerfest, Alta, Vadso, Vardo, Kirkenes and Longyearbyen on Svalbard.
The North Atlantic island nation of Iceland contains several cities in the tundra. These cities include Saudarkrokur and Eskifjordur.
Greenland contains several settlements in the tundra. These cities include Etah, Thule, Godhavn and Ittoqqortoormiit.
