BB Gun Laws in Massachusetts: No Purchase Permit, But Strict Use Rules

No permit is required to purchase a BB gun in Massachusetts (unlike firearms), but you must be 18+ to buy.

Critical Restrictions (MGL c. 269, §12B)

• No discharge in public places without owner/occupant permission (parks, schools, streets).
• No shooting at living things (animals, birds, people).
• No reckless discharge endangering persons/property.
• Eye protection mandatory for shooter and bystanders.
• High-velocity BB guns (>350 fps) = "dangerous weapons"; must be registered with Mass. Dept. of Public Safety.
• No sale/transfer to under 18.
• No use while intoxicated.

Penalties

Violations: misdemeanor (up to 2.5 years house of correction, fines). Local ordinances (Boston, Cambridge, etc.) may be stricter—some ban BB guns entirely.

Treat BB guns as weapons, not toys. Supervise minors; use only on private property with backstop.
