Why did Michigan want to join the union?

Michigan became a state to have greater control over its affairs and resources. As a territory, Michigan was subject to decisions made by Congress and the president, who were far removed from the region and not always understanding of its needs. By becoming a state, Michigan gained the power to elect its own representatives to Congress, pass its own laws, and develop its economy, and infrastructure according to its unique requirements. It provided greater autonomy and the ability to make decisions that specifically benefited the people of Michigan. Additionally, statehood also brought increased federal funding for projects such as road and canal construction, further supporting Michigan's growth and development.
