Alaska State Campgrounds

Vacationers can enjoy an Alaskan back-country experience by tent or RV camping at one of Alaska's state campgrounds. Often surrounded by mountain ranges, timberland and lakes, Alaska's state campgrounds provide the opportunity for hiking, water recreation, fishing and wildlife encounters. Many of the state campgrounds are non-electric and include minimal amenities. The Alaska tourism office recommends calling ahead, if possible, to determine if a reservation is required at the state campground you're interested in.
  1. Bird Creek Campground

    • Bird Creek Campground is located 20 miles southeast of Anchorage, off of mile 101 on the Seward Highway. Surrounded by mountain ranges and vast wilderness, Bird Creek resides inside Chugach State Park, the third largest state park in America. Home to the grizzly bear, moose and deer, Bird Creek offers hiking, picnicking and water recreation such as swimming, fishing and whale watching. The campground is non-electric and offers 28 camping sites for both tent and RV camping. RV length is limited to 35 feet. Campground amenities include running water, toilet facilities, fire rings, picnic tables and a covered picnic shelter. Bird Creek Campground requires a daily parking and per-night camping fee, with a maximum seven-night stay.

    Big Delta State Historical Park

    • Big Delta State Historical Park offers historical highlights along with an 11-acre camping site for both tent and RV camping. This state park is located eight miles north of Delta Junction, at mile 274.5 on Richardson Highway. Twenty-five non-electric camping sites are available with running water and toilet facilities. Historical attractions at Big Delta include Rika's Roadhouse, which served trappers, traders and travelers in the early 1900s, as well as the original telegraph station used for military communications between Alaska and Washington, D.C. Big Delta offers access to lake recreation, hiking and wildlife and requires a per-night camping fee with a 15-day camping limit.

    Eagle Beach State Recreation Area

    • Eagle Beach State Recreation Area, part of the Alaska state park system, is located in Juneau, at mile 29 on Glacier Highway. A 600-acre site, Eagle Beach offers access to the Eagle and Herbert rivers as well as extensive hiking trails, including a quarter-mile paved trail with viewing scopes for enjoying scenic views. A coastal, white sand beach provides the opportunity for watching sea life as well as birds and other animals such as brown and black bears. Camp sites for tent and RV camping are available, with an RV length limit of 35 feet. Eagle Beach is non-electric, with running water and toilet facilities available. Daily parking and per-night camping fees apply.
