Tent Camping Campgrounds in CT

Connecticut may have the reputation of being part of the industrialized Northeast corridor, but it also has some excellent areas for camping. Whether they are private or state-run campgrounds; located inland or along a beach, most feature sites for campers who wish to rough it a bit by staying in tents.
  1. Lake Waramaug State Park

    • Named after an Indian chief, 95-acre Lake Waramaug State Park in the western part of Connecticut has 77 camping sites that can accommodate either tents or RVs. Sites are available in both open or wooded areas. The campground is open from Memorial Day weekend until late September. Amenities include bathrooms, picnic tables and showers. The park has a food concession and is popular for fishing and swimming in Lake Waramaug. The scenic park also draws fall visitors to view its foliage. It offers canoes for rent, a public phone, a picnic area, a picnic shelter and a dump station for RVs.

    Hammonasset Beach State Park

    • The largest public beach park in Connecticut, Hammonasset Beach State Park sits along the shores of Long Island Sound near Madison in the southern part of the state. The park encompasses two miles of beach area where guests enjoy swimming, saltwater fishing, sunbathing and walking along a boardwalk. The park has picnic areas, bicycling trails and a nature center with exhibits and programs. The popularity of Hammonasset Beach State Park has resulted in establishment of 550 campsites in grassy areas that are ideal for tents. The campground includes a food concession, dumping station, bathrooms and showers. Alcohol and pets are not allowed. The campground is open from the middle of May until the end of October.

    Mystic KOA

    • Two miles from an exit on Interstate 95 in the southeastern part of Connecticut, Mystic KOA near North Stonington gives guests the choice of staying in cabins, tent-camping, or RV sites. The campground is open throughout the year and is located in a hilly and forested area. It has two pools open during the warmer months, a miniature golf course, a catch-and-release fishing pond, a jumping pillow and bike rentals. Other features include an outdoor movie area, hay rides and theme weekends. LP Gas is available for a charge, while wireless Internet and modem data ports are free. Campers can rent bikes. Beaches, casinos and the historic town of Mystic are all nearby.
