Amidst rolling hills and longleaf pines, the Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, offers 85 RV campsites and 60 tent sites. You have access to sewer, water and electric hook-ups. If you bring your family pet, you must have a leash. While you visit plan for a backpacking trip, since the campground has more than 50 miles of trails. Call for a reservation Mondays through Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you plan to stay for a holiday, there is a minimum three-night reservation. Weekend getaways require a two-night stay.
Expect waterfalls, vibrant wildflowers and plenty of foliage at the Desoto State Park. The 3,502-acre park offers 94 RV campsites, 20 tent sites, 25 motel rooms and numerous cabins. RV campsites have full hook-ups and cable access. If you need a place to store your RV when you are not camping, Desoto State Park has space set aside for $30 a month as of 2010.
Bring your bike so you can go mountain biking along one of the trails. Take a swim in the Olympic-size swimming pool to start your morning. Then relax in the afternoon with a picnic next to the playground. Camping fee is approximately $30. Major holidays require a minimum of a three-night stay, and a two-night minimum is required for weekend stays.
The 696-acre Chewacla State Park offers cabins, tent sites and full hook-up RV sites. Expect chipmunks, deer turkeys and red fox roaming through the park. Bring your own watercraft, such as a kayak, canoe or small boat to sail on the 26-acre Lake Chewacla. Your watercraft cannot have a motor. You can walk or hike along one of the eight trails to exercise. Swim in the lake, but be careful since there are no lifeguards on the property. If you bring your pet, the campground charges a $15 nightly fee for each pet. Camping fee are less than $30 as of 2010.
Bring your RV to the Gulf State Park with 496 sites. Every site is paved and spacious for pullouts. However, some people may opt to reserve a cottage or cabin. Arrange for tee-time on the 18-hole Gulf State Park Golf Course on the property. Take an early morning jog along the Catman Trail or Gulf Park Oak Ridge Trail in the park. Also, do not leave your computer at home, since there is complimentary wireless Internet access available in designated locations.
While on your RV vacation, consider a trip to the longest pier on the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf Pier. You can eat in the indoor concession area and shop for souvenirs in the shopping space. In addition, Lake Lurleen and Lake Guntersville allows fishing and canoeing on the property. You can rent a fishing boat without a motor for a half a day for under $8, and the boat launching fee ranges from $1 to $4. While you are visiting Lake Guntersville try hiking on one of the 20 trails.
