Places to Go Camping in Virginia

The sprawling forests of Virginia have long been a popular camping destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Virginia has more than 30 state parks, most of which allow overnight tent or cabin camping. Each park has different activities and facilities, so it wise for travelers to know what their preferred camping interests are in advance, then check with the park to ensure they can accommodate requests.
  1. Twin Lakes State Park

    • Twin Lakes State Park is located in central Virginia, one hour outside of the city of Richmond. The park has over 50 tent campsites throughout the park, each with a grill and fire pit, most with picnic tables. Every site is equipped with water and 30 amp electric hookups and there are several clean restrooms and showers throughout the park. While there is no RV camping at this park, there are a number of small cabins available for rental as well as a large, four-bedroom lodge for large parties. There is swimming and fishing available on the lake year-round, and on some weekends the park has a concession stand set up for special concerts and events.
