Tent Campgrounds in Texas

Tent campgrounds can be found throughout the state of Texas. State parks offer inexpensive options for camping along some of the state's vast rivers and lakes. Tent camping can be enjoyed year-round in Texas. Summers are very hot but camping near a body of water will give you an easy way to cool off during the day.

  1. Lake Brownwood State Park

    • Lake Brownwood State Park is located 16 miles northwest of Brownwood in Brown County. The park was opened in 1938. There are 97 campsites available at the park and 31 have been designated for tent camping only. Campers can take advantage of the swimming area, lighted fishing pier, boat dock, picnic sites and park store. The camp also has two and a half miles of hiking trails and a half mile nature trail. Lake Brownwood State Park is open for camping year-round.

    Huntsville State Park

    • Huntsville State Park is located just six miles southwest of Huntsville in Walker County. The park was originally opened in 1938 but after a flood in 1940 the park sat dormant until it was renovated and reopened in 1956. Huntsville State Park has over 180 camping sites that are scattered across the over 2,000 acres of the park. Campers can take advantage of the two fishing piers, three fish cleaning stations, equestrian stables, boat ramp, swimming area, playground and nature center. The park offers boat rental and 19 miles of trails for hiking and biking.

    Mustang Island State Park

    • Mustang Island State Park is located on the Gulf of Mexico just south of Port Aransas and Corpus Christi. The island was named after the herds of wild mustangs brought to the island by Spaniards during the 1800s. Campers can enjoy one of the 300 primitive campsites on the beach or one of the 48 campsites separated from the beach by sand dunes. Always check with the park before heading to camp to ensure that high tides have not restricted beach camping. Mustang Island State Park has five miles of open beach for hiking and biking along with open swimming in the Gulf of Mexico.
