Why does Yellowstone have hot spots?

Yellowstone's hot spots are the surface expression of a rising mantle plume. This plume of hot, molten rock originates from deep within the Earth's mantle and rises towards the surface because it is less dense than the surrounding rock. As it rises, the plume spreads out and begins to melt the crustal rock of the North American continent. This molten rock, or magma, can then erupt to form volcanoes or, more often, it slowly seeps upwards and fills in cracks in the crust. The heat from the plume also causes the surrounding rocks to become heated, which can result in the formation of hot springs, geysers, and other geothermal features.

The Yellowstone hotspot is unique because it is located in a continental setting, rather than at a plate boundary. This means that it is not associated with the collision of two tectonic plates. Instead, the Yellowstone hotspot is thought to be the result of a mantle plume that is rising from deep within the Earth. This plume is thought to be relatively stationary, and it has been responsible for the formation of a series of volcanoes that extends from the Snake River Plain in Idaho to the Yellowstone Plateau in Wyoming.
