Hammersmith & Fulham Tips

Hammersmith and Fulham are two adjacent areas in west central London and together they form one of the British capital's 32 boroughs. Both areas are close to all the sights of central London, while they also offer distinct attractions to visitors. They can be the ideal starting points for your London vacation.
  1. Accommodations

    • Out of the two parts of the borough, Hammersmith is the less costly when it comes to accommodations. Both areas are quite pricey compared to the cheaper alternatives of East and South London, but as Fulham is an upmarket area, expect to pay more than £100 per night during high season (June to August) as of 2011. On the contrary, Hammersmith's can be cheaper, as you can find rooms at budget hotels, such as Rex (rexhotellondon.co.uk) and Golden Strand (goldenstrandhotel.co.uk), for as little as £53 a night.

    Experiencing the Soccer Craze

    • Soccer (strictly called "football" in the United Kingdom) is represented in Hammersmith and Fulham by two of England's premier clubs: Chelsea F.C. and Fulham F.C. Despite the fact that Chelsea is the name of the adjacent area, "Stamford Bridge" -- home ground of Chelsea F.C. -- is actually located in Fulham. Premier League games sell out quickly, so make the necessary preparations months before you depart for London.

    Shows

    • For musical and concert enthusiasts, there are few better locales in London than Hammersmith. The reason is simple: it's where the Hammersmith Apollo (venues.meanfiddler.com/apollo/home) is located. Every large production or big name of the global music scene visits the Apollo every year, but as with soccer matches, tickets can sell out nearly instantly. Smaller venues for more distinctive audiences include the Jazz Cafe POSK (posk.org) and the Irish Cultural Centre (irishculturalcentre.co.uk) in Hammersmith.

    Dangerous Neighborhoods

    • Both areas feature huge blocks of flats called "council estates," which serves as low-income housing. Such is the notoriety of certain parts of the borough that, as of 2011, a British TV program "Brit Cops" follows the Metropolitan Police in action around the streets of Hammersmith and Fulham.
