Road Construction Intersection Warnings

Road construction or work zone signs serve a very important function in traffic situations. Construction signs often have diamond shapes, but some are rectangular; they're always orange with black lettering. Road construction signs are set up to identify construction, maintenance and utility areas where tools and machinery are being used by workers. Drivers encountering construction zones should turn on their headlights and read and obey all intersection warning signs. Drivers should familiarize themselves with the various signs and their meanings.
  1. Turn On Headlights

    • The Work Zone State Law Turn On Headlights sign is put out to warn drivers of an impending work or construction zone. The Work Zone portion of the sign doesn't deviate from construction sign protocol (black on orange), but the State Law Turn On Headlights portion is on a white background. The sign has a rectangular shape, and it directs you to turn on your headlights to ensure you see further warning signs ahead as well as personnel and machinery.

    End Active Work Zone

    • The End Active Work Zone sign, which is rectangular, informs drivers they're passing out of an active work zone. Normal driving can continue from that point forward, unless additional speed regulation signs have been installed.

    Active Work Zone When Flashing

    • The Active Work Zone When Flashing sign is also rectangular. If it's accompanied by a flashing strobe or rotating beacon, it means work is in progress...and instructs drivers to slow down.

    Road Work Ahead

    • The diamond-shaped Road Work Ahead sign explains that construction activity is very near. It basically warns drivers to slow down.

    Right Lane Closed 1,000 Feet

    • The Right Lane Closed 1,000 Feet sign signifies that double-lane traffic will merge into the left lane at a specified distance of 1,000 feet. Drivers should prepare to merge into single file when they see this diamond-shaped sign.

    Workers Ahead

    • The Workers Ahead sign indicates that construction personnel are in the roadway or in proximity to it. It cautions drivers to slow down. The diamond-shaped sign includes a black, graphic silhouette of a person wielding a shovel.

    Flagmen Ahead

    • The Flagmen Ahead sign consists of the silhouette of a person waving an outstretched flag. It warns drivers that they should slow down and prepare for directions from a flagman.

    Lighted Signs

    • Lighted signs, which direct drivers' attention by way of rotating or flashing strobes, are typically accompanied by a written message specific to the warning. Lighted arrows can indicate the proper lanes to use or detours to take. Yellow flashers on stands indicate partial blockades, so drivers know to not cross near, over or behind them.
