Call a taxicab company. Any local phone book or its online version will have listings of taxicab companies and operators. Typically, you can call for a taxi to pick you up at that moment, or for a specific time in the future. This is helpful, for example, if you want to book an early morning ride to the airport. Some taxi companies also let you book services online.
Go to a taxi stand, which may be marked by a signpost bearing the word "Taxi," or with the word "Taxi" painted on the pavement. Taxi stands are permanent locations where taxis line up to wait for passengers.
Go to a busy intersection and hail a cab. In large urban areas you can find taxis driving along large busy streets. Stand on the side of the street that receives the most traffic -- in the direction of the city's downtown or an airport, for example -- and wait at the sidewalk corner. When you see a taxi, immediately raise your arm and try to establish eye contact with the driver.
Go to the arrivals area of any transportation hub, including airports, bus stations and ferry terminals. Walk outside to the pavement area. There may be a taxi stand there with taxis waiting, as is common at many airports. However, even if there is no taxi stand, taxis will often regularly stop to pick up passengers.
Go to a big or busy hotel. Even if you are not a guest there, go to the reception or concierge desk and ask the agent if he could call you a taxicab immediately.
