Finding the registration number for your VAT purchase can make the difference between getting some extra cash back and paying a 33-percent sales tax. Americans are not require to pay the VAT because they do not live in Europe.



A VAT refund may take up to 18 months to arrive and can only be refunded for purchases over a certain minimum amount, depending where your purchases were made. In France, for instance, you have to spend over $230 to get a VAT refund.



If you have the VAT registration number, you can fill out your VAT application and acquire a tax refund on the items you purchased either at the airport before your departure or on the phone after your return home to the US.

      Visit the local customs office before boarding your flight home. The customs office is usually inside the airport.

      Present the receipts and items that you purchased. After examining the items, the customs agent will stamp your receipt and give you your VAT registration number.

      Fill out the tax forms after the security check. Provide your name, address and payment information, such as your credit card number, your card type and its expiration date. The customs agent will give you a refund right there, reimburse your credit card or send you a check.

      Gather your international receipts to so you are able to answer the representative's questions. Make sure you know off-hand what you purchased.

      Call the VAT advice center at (0845) 010-8500.

      Ask the VAT representative for the registration number of the store where you made your purchases. The representative will ask for the name and location of the store.

      Ask the representative to assist you in properly using the registration number to petition for your refund over the phone.
