Take a car trip, using a detailed map of the area and explore. Start in Punta Gorda and work your way, south, down the coast to Everglades City. Become familiar with the target area and create a first-hand geographical image of potential places to live.
Use your notebook to record information, including thoughts and ideas. Record exact locations, making sure to write the names of developments and any other important housing information, such as gated community or amenities such as golf, tennis or community pool.
Gather available real estate information or record addresses and contact information on interesting properties that are for sale. Include contact information at sales centers or names and numbers on signs.
Use the information in your notebook to narrow the search and determine the general location for your southwest Florida home. If, for example, the results of your journey and diary point to Naples, circle that entire area in red on your map.
Take another exploratory journey, with your notebook travel guide, to the area circled in red on your map. This trip, and your notes, will concentrate on visiting the beaches, shopping and cultural areas, restaurants and other personal places of interest.
Evaluate your notes to determine a more specific area to find a house. If your favorite beach and restaurants are in the northern section of the red circle, contact a real estate agent or work independently, using your own information as a guide to locate potential properties in that part of town.
