Pine, Idaho is a small village located on the banks of the Anderson Ranch Reservoir within the Sawtooth National Forest. Pine and the area surrounding Anderson Ranch Reservoir are popular destinations for fishermen, campers and hikers -- many of whom need access to firewood. Firewood in the Pine area is easy to obtain, but because of its location in a national forest, there are regulations about obtaining firewood.

      Obtain a firewood cutting permit at your closest ranger station. A permit that allows two cords of wood per permit for personal use costs $25.

      Locate the nearest firewood cutting area. These areas are marked by black and orange signs that say "Firewood Cutting Area." The ranger station can help you locate the nearest firewood cutting area. Do not cut firewood within 150 feet of streams or lakes.

      Hike into the firewood cutting area and begin your search. Locate as many dry logs and branches as possible within the Firewood Cutting Area. Using your axe, cut down the larger branches into smaller, more portable logs.
