How to Find a Location by Address

If you have an address, finding a location is very easy because the address is the location. Having an address means the place you're looking for has been mapped, and a number of resources are avaiable to help direct you to a specific address. You could use a map, street guide, the Internet, or GPS (global positioning system) navigation. Then there's the simplest of all choices, which is asking a knowledgeable person for directions. Postal workers, police officers, gas station attendants, or taxi or delivery drivers, to name a few, are typically good sources to ask for local directions.

Use the Internet to obtain door-to-door directions. Websites such as MapQuest.com, Maps.Google.com, Maps.Yahoo.com, MapPoint.MSN.com, Maps.com, and YellowPages.com, to name a few, all offer door-to-door directions. Go to one of these websites. Type in the address where you are staring from, then type in the address you want to find in the "ending address" section. Click "Enter." You will be supplied with a map and written directions to the location you would like to find.

Buy a street guide for the city or state where your address is located. A street guide is a book of maps. Street guides are different from maps, however, in that they also supply an index of all the streets shown on the maps contained in the book. Go to the guide's index. Find the section for the town that matches your address. Under this section, look for the street that corresponds to your address. There will be a set of coordinates next to it; make a note of these coordinates. Flip to the map of your town, and use the coordinates to find the location. Use this information to plot a course to that address.

Invest in a GPS. GPS uses satellite technology to direct you to any given location from wherever you currently are. You can buy a GPS system to put into your car. There are also handheld GPS systems, and some cell phones also have this feature. After you go through the initial programming procedure, go outside with your GPS, turn it on, and wait for the GPS to calculate your current position. Then select "Find," then "Address" and enter the address you want to find. The GPS will then provide you with directions to that location.
