How to Find Area Codes and Exchanges

Receiving mysterious calls from an unknown number? Verifying the area code and exchange or prefix through a website geared to the task can help pinpoint the city and area of town where the number originates. Area code and prefix sites also allow users to enter a state, city or ZIP code to identify the area code and prefix. The reasons for looking up these numbers may be personal, but finding the numbers is easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit WhereCall.com. Enter the phone number in the entry field at the start of the page. Click "Look up." The resulting page will tell you the region, town and type of phone line.

    • 2

Return to the homepage. Scroll down to the table of states. Select the state for which you would like to find an area code and exchange. If you already know the area code, select the area code. The resulting page will list all of the exchanges for that area code, including the townships or areas where the exchange originates.

    • 3

Access the Google Find Area Codes and Exchanges web application (see Resources). Enter the name of the city for which an area code and prefix is desired. For large cities, the area codes will be separated by ZIP codes. Scroll through the list of ZIP codes and click the appropriate one. The area code and exchange will result.
