How to Find Free Places to Go on Vacation

Whether it is winter, spring, summer or fall, it is nice to take a break and go on vacation. When it's free, that makes it twice as nice. As you plan your next vacation, be sure to include no-cost historic sites and tourist attractions that the entire family can enjoy.

Contact the Convention and Visitors Bureau of the city you would like to visit. Ask for the names and contact information of sites and attractions which are completely free. If you are visiting Santa Barbara, California, for example, the Santa Barbara Conference & Visitors Bureau and Film Commission advertises "101 Free Things to Do." On specified days, you can check out the Museum of Natural History, Painted Caves, Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, UCSB Marine Lab, Kidsworld, and Romero Canyon.

Reach out to your local newspaper and request information on travel articles that cover free attractions in various cities, states or countries. One such place is the nation's capital. Your family can learn America's rich history while visiting fascinating attractions in Washington, D.C. Tour the U.S. Capital, Ford's Theatre, the FBI, Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and Navy Museum. There are also free guided tours of the White House. However, reservations must be made through your U.S. Senator or U.S. Congressman several weeks in advance.

Visit your neighborhood library. Check out specific books and research periodicals on free places to go while on vacation. Ask to check out the digital book entitled "101 FREE Things to Do In Europe" by Gabe Lara. Your local library will charge you a nominal fee to print out articles that you have located on free attractions. If you will be visiting the Big Apple -- New York City -- these attractions will be free on particular days and times: the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Empire State Building, Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Gardens and Jones Beach State Park.

Surf the net. Enter "101 Free Things" and the state of your choice into a search engine. This will yield numerous links. Check out places to visit in Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, Maryland, Oklahoma and many other states. Select the city of your choice. The names of the attractions, their descriptions and contact information will be provided for you. Atlanta features Screen-on-the-Green Movies at Piedmont Park, Live Music at On the Bricks and tours of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Center for Nonviolent Change.

Ask a Travel Club for information. Contact a member of a local travel club for assistance. These individuals have traveled throughout the United States and the world. If you do not know anyone in a travel club, call the Women's Travel Club or the Affordable Travel Club and ask if they provide this information for nonmembers. You may also consider joining an organization of this nature if it will save you money in the long run.
