Located approximately 50 miles from downtown Montoursville sits the Knoebels Amusement Park and Campground. The area promises fun for a day or an entire weekend. An admission free park, guests only pay for each ride they want to enjoy. The amusement park offers attractions for young and old alike; rides include a carousel, roller coasters, water rides, kiddie rides, carnival rides and even a haunted house. There is also a full water-park to cool off.
Visitors to the park who wish to camp are welcome at the park operated campground. Campsites include 50 amp hookups, tent sites, park model trailers and cabin rentals. Reservations are strongly suggested. Shuttle service from the campground to the amusement park is available.
Children of all ages will be enthralled with the reptile and amphibian exhibits at Clyde Peeling's Reptiland. Located approximately 16 miles from Montoursville, the zoo provides up close educational experiences in their indoor exhibit hall with 40 species of reptiles and amphibians. Visitors will find displays with live cobras, alligators, pythons and mambas. The facility offers educational programs throughout the day. Each show focuses on a certain reptile for an in-depth look at its behavior. Daily animal feedings lets the public glimpse how the animals react at mealtime. An on-site gift shop is also available.
Clyde Peeling's Reptiland also offers private birthday parties with advance reservations.
Approximately 50 miles form Montoursville sits Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park. A large water cavern with towering stalactites and stalagmites, visitors can take a guided boat tour into the heart of the limestone cave. Dress warmly when touring the cave because the cavern temperature hovers at 52 degrees Fahrenheit even in the height of summer. After the water cave tour, the family can opt to take a wildlife tour across the 1,500 acre of wildlife preserve. They may catch glimpses of bobcats, bison, black bears, wolves or cougars. The tour is guided and lasts approximately 90 minutes. After the tour, visitors may wish to try their hand at panning for gemstones in an old time sluice.
The park has a cafe, gift store and picnic ground.
Pack a picnic lunch or load the camping gear and head for Ricketts Glen State Park. Located approximately 40 miles from Montoursville, the park offers a diverse trail system with 22 waterfalls. The parkland covers 13,050 acres. Park activities include swimming, camping, boating, fishing and horseback riding trails. The campground boasts 120 campsites for trailers or tents. Showers and flush toilets are also available. A 600 foot beach offers an ideal area for families to enjoy a summer time swim. Picnic areas have charcoal grills for guests to use. There is also a snack bar for last-minute purchases.
