Children's Activities While Traveling

While most children enjoy traveling and family vacations, many need activities to occupy their attention no matter what their energy levels. Parents and kids will appreciate a little planning so both understand what will happen during activities and down times---especially during long plane, train or car rides. It can be extremely valuable to prepare an arsenal of entertainment options to have at the ready during travel when children become tired, anxious, bored or homesick. Try to get kids to collect ticket stubs, pictures, postcards, menus, seashells and other free souvenirs along the way to serve as mementos.
  1. In Transit

    • It's nearly inevitable kids will become bored during long car, train and plane rides. Parents with an attack plan that includes activities, snacks and games will help children learn to enjoy traveling. Many cars have DVD players factory installed, but families without this technology may choose to rent or purchase personal-sized DVD players for children to use on long car trips. Many airlines rent personal-sized DVD players on long flights. Children and adults enjoy games like car bingo, which can be personalized for plane or train travel as well.

    At Hotels

    • Instead of spending down time in front of the TV, it's a good idea to plan a variety of activities at the hotel to help everyone stay refreshed. Try to book a hotel that has a swimming pool and/or a playground, so kids can expend energy there. Some hotels even have kids clubs, where children can play with other young guests and their parents can enjoy some quiet time together or an activity that's not child-friendly.

    Seeing the Sights

    • Be sure to research activities available at your destination that will be enjoyable for kids. Think fun when you choose to visit places like the Grand Canyon, Empire State Building, Alcatraz or the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Children often enjoy odd tourist attractions such as the world's biggest ball of twine and Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum. Check out local fair and carnival schedules to find seasonal activities, and try to try visit at least one amusement park during the trip.

    Learning Something

    • Most kids will enjoy visiting educational destinations as long as you ensure they don't remind them too much of school. Most major cities have at least one aquarium, where you can see sea creatures that are indigenous to the area as well as exotic fish and sea mammals. Many cities also boast children's museums and science centers with interactive exhibits that may include IMAX educational movies, Harry Potter exhibits, and planetariums.
