Things Kids Can Do in the Car While Traveling

Traveling with kids on long car trips can be stressful for the adults and boring for the kids, but it doesn't need to be. The important thing to do remember is to plan ahead. Bring favorite DVDs and electronic games to occupy your kids, or entertain them with a surprise book on tape from the library followed by a spirited game of twenty questions.
  1. DVDs and Books on Tapes

    • Kids will stay entertained for hours once they start watching their favorite movie, a television program you've recorded ahead of time or a book on tape or CD by their favorite author. DVD players can be purchased at any store that sells electronic devices. Remember to place the DVD player where all the kids can see it to avoid fighting. DVDs, tapes and CDS can be purchased from a store, rented or even borrowed from a library. Stop for gas or a break during an especially exciting scene and your children will be excited to hop back in the car again.

    Car Scavenger Hunt

    • To encourage your children to look out of their car windows and see the world around them while traveling, prepare a scavenger hunt. Scavenger hunts include compiling a list of items that will be seen on the car ride such as trains, churches, police cars, dogs, motorcycle, lakes, pedestrians or license plates from different states. Give a list to each child and have them check off each item as they see it. Give a special prize to the person who finds all the items on his list first, then exchange lists and play again.

    Electronic games

    • Hand held video games and other electronic toys can be a fun diversion while traveling for kids of all ages. There are a variety of games to play, from the educational to the purely entertaining. Children can switch games with each other or play against each other to keep from getting bored of their game. Bring along an extra game and join in yourself. Your kid will be excited to show you how to play, and boast about beating you.

    Twenty Questions

    • Twenty questions is a perfect game to play while traveling in the car that even the driver can enjoy. One player thinks of something such as a person, place or thing and the other players ask "yes" or "no" questions to try and guess the unknown object. The first player to guess the object in less than twenty questions wins. Twenty questions can be played while driving during the day or night and is a creative way to keep kids entertained while traveling.
