Get a spiral-bound notebook and a box of markers or crayons, glue sticks and tape for each child. Have them draw pictures and write about each part of the trip. They can document the strange names of places they visit, or sketch an account of fun activities. They can also paste small keepsakes such as brochures and ticket stubs into the notebook. Make sure they leave a few blank pages for adding pictures taken during the trip.
Purchase an inexpensive metal tray, one that will adhere to magnets. The tray can be used to play simple magnetic games such as tic-tac-toe, checkers, and dolls. Another option is to cover one side of the tray with white contact paper. Include some markers and an eraser and let the kids draw and write on the tray.
Bingo can be played many different ways while traveling. First, create several bingo cards. Think about where you will be going, and find pictures that relate to things your children will see. Paste the pictures on the cards. To play the game, the kids must find the objects on the card sometime during the trip. For example, if a child has a card with a photo of a cow on it, and she sees a cow during the trip, she gets a point. The one with the most points earns a prize, like a special souvenir.
Pack items such as aluminum foil, string and yarn. Kids can use the items to create artwork while traveling. Also, pack a few small toys, music players, cards and books children can entertain themselves with if the other activities grow boring.
