Get the facts about the Keys. The Keys are an island chain that measures 120 miles and is linked to Florida by the Overseas Highway, otherwise known as Route One. Families can drive to each island, take ferries to Key West from Marco Island or Fort Meyers Beach, or fly. The Keys are home to two airports, the Key West International Airport and Florida Keys Airport in Marathon. Key West is the southernmost city in the Keys while Marathon is mid-way between Key West and Key Largo, the northernmost city in the Keys. The Keys' mild climate makes them an ideal vacation destination any time of year. The average winter temperature is around 75 degrees and the average summer temperature is around 90 degrees.
Get packing. First, make a list of everything your kids need throughout the day and then determine how much you need of each essential to make your trip a successful and happy one. Second, see if you can purchase these essentials at your Keys destination. If your child is still drinking formula and sporting diapers, pack enough of both to get you by and then purchase more once you get to your destination. The items might cost more, but you will be saving precious space in your luggage. If you are flying to the Keys, be aware of the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) rules concerning the storage of kiddie essentials, such as formula, snacks, drinks and medications. If driving, make a list of suitable places to stop for potty and snack breaks.
Get a room. Find lodging that is not only kid-friendly, but that has everyone's needs in mind. Many hotels, such as Casa Marina in Key West, provide baby equipment, such as high chairs and cribs. Casa Marina also provides babysitting so that the parents can enjoy Key West nightlife by themselves. If money is an issue and your kids don't like trying new foods, stay in a hotel suite. Ocean Pointe Suites in Key Largo offers spacious suites with fully equipped kitchens where you can quickly whip up snacks and meals to keep your hungry kids happy. Choose a hotel with a pool, or is near the ocean and is within walking distance of attractions that will please the family.
Get going. The Keys offer a wealth of different activities. Water lovers will enjoy diving at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, swimming with dolphins at Grassy Key's Dolphin Research Center and getting up close with sea lions at the Theater of the Sea in Islamorada. Key West offers many kid-friendly activities such as exploring the Key West Nature Preserve and discovering the shops and restaurants of Duval Street. Be sure to head to Mallory Square an hour before sundown for the daily "Sunset Celebration" where food vendors and performers gather to celebrate the end of another glorious day.
