Guidelines for Gratuities on Alaska Cruise Tours

Tipping aboard a cruise, whether in Alaska or not, is a fairly simple process and most cruise lines offer suggestions and guidelines. In addition some cruise lines even offer pre-pay programs for tipping. If you are unsure of tipping standards for your specific cruise line you can always ask your travel agent or your booking agent for their advice.
  1. General

    • Gratuities generally average between $10 and $12 each day for each person, as of 2010. Some cruise lines will recommend a reduced price for children. That amount goes towards all of the different cruise employees who may aid you throughout the day -- like the steward, a server, or room service.

    Plans

    • Some cruise lines offer a service in which you can have your tips debited each day or debited at the end or beginning of your trip. Some cruise lines that offer these options will allow you to adjust your tips day-to-day based upon the quality of services provided.

    Personal Service

    • If you choose to partake in a personal service such as a lesson, or massage you will be expected to provide a tip to whomever provides the service. A 15 percent gratuity is expected; that 15 percent is also generally applied if you order a beverage on a cruise.
