How to make planes, trains & automobiles fun for kids

Travel on a train, plane or in an automobile with kids can be overwhelming. With some thought and preparation traveling with your little ones can be fun. Start with the right attitude. Tell yourself that getting there is going to be just as much fun as the trip you are taking. Don't set expectations, be spontaneous. If you are smiling your children will smile.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan ahead. As soon as you make your reservations start planning. Begin to imagine each step of the trip.

The family car ride can be fun

Start with a fun car ride. Your trip may either all be via car or you may have a drive to a train station or airport. Don't ignore plans for the car ride if it is only part of your travels. If the kids are old enough give them a little bag with "car toys". Explain to them that these toys are for the car ride only and they will be left in the car. There are more toys and games for the rest of the trip. They can help select some toys from the house and pack their own car bags. Take your time and make it interesting for them by telling them they have to only select a few things. Dolls, cars, and books all work well. Don't forget old favorite car ride games like "I spy" and singing songs.

Pack a portable DVD player. This can be used in the car, train or plane. Although many airlines offer individual monitors with entertainment on the plane, if your children are young they may enjoy their own videos like Baby Einstein or a personal favorite that comforts them. Bring headphones. However, if they are too young you can play the DVD quietly on the plane or train without disturbing neighbors.

Pack surprises. Rent or buy a few new videos. You can rent free movies at your local library usually. At craft stores you can purchase inexpensive $1 items which make great surprise gifts. Pace yourself and when the kids are getting antsy bring out a new toy.

    • 5

Shop for travel friendly toys to bring in advance. Some good ideas are: Colorforms, Ravenburger Ribbon Puzzles, pipe cleaners, crayons, and stickers.

    • 6

Make a small photo album to bring and point out friends and relatives. Explain that you can take pictures on your trip then make a new book when you get back.

    • 7

Relax. If you are stressed your children will be as well. Remind yourself that your children will grow up fast and before you know it be travelling on their own.

    • 8

Change clothes. If the plane, train or car ride is a long one bring a change of comfortable clothes like a sweatsuit or pajamas. Go through your night time routine the best you can. If they have a favorite blanket, pillow or stuffed animal bring it along for comfort.

Smile through your plane flight with the kids

If flying, be prepared for security checks. In line talk to your children about taking their shoes off. Have them "help" you get ready to put items on the conveyor belt. Separate any bottles or formula into different baggies to help security go through your items.

    • 10

Dress comfortably. Bring an extra shirt (at least) for each parent as well. No one wants to arrive or sit in a plane, train or automobile with a spit-up covered shirt.

    • 11

Pack snacks. Baggies or travel containers full of goldfish, crackers, granola bars, gummy treats or sliced fruit can help cranky hungry children calm down. Serve any items that are not going to make it through security in the car on the way to the airport. Also bring old shopping bags to use as travel trash cans - they are easy to pack and an easy way to clean up around you.

    • 12

Bring a water bottle or sippy cup for each child. In a plane have them take sips during take off and landing explaining to them that it will help their ears.
